Lord of the Squirrels – Whistler, BC
We’ve recently been riding the newest alpine trail in Whistler, BC… Lord of the Squirrels.
This trail is an absolute gem and is definitely worth the 5000 foot climb (with the reward of a 5000 foot descent!). The trail is a collaboration between WORCA and the Municipality of Whistler, with the Municipality having built the climb and WORCA having built the descent. The climb up is steep and long so make sure you either have an actual granny gear on your bike (2x system) or, if you are running 1x, we recommend at least a 30×42 setup or even easier if you have it. The climb route (at the time of writing this) is not yet complete, so there’s a very short hike to connect the climb to the descent. It is easy to follow and you just need to spot the ribbons and rock cairns to connect the two trails.

The best way to access the trail is to start at the Flank trail in Function Junction and pedal up to the climbing trail. We will have a proper Must do Ride on RideSpots.com soon. With better directions. Other people have been pedaling up Lord of the Squirrels then turning around and descending… we were not as keen on this idea as it seems harder, but it is a more direct route.

Once you’re into the alpine and at the top of the Lord of the Squirrels descent, there is an out-and-back route that we absolutely recommend riding:
Sproatt Summit on Trailforks.com
Once you finish Lord of the Squirrels descent, you’ll still have a fair bit of descending left to get back to Function Junction where you started. A good route down from there is Working Class to Danimal Middle to Lower Sproat. A much rowdier option would be to descend AC/DC and the easiest option is to descend the Flank trail all the way back to your starting point.
We like starting and finishing at Function Junction as you can easily have a beer and meal at the Whistler Brewing Company or a baked treat at Pure Bread. You can also get your bike sorted at the last minute at Fineline Bike shop, or Chromag Bikes which are also located in Function.
More about RideSpots.com: Our locations are featured below… stay tuned as we are adding more as fast as we can and yes… we are working on Fernie, Rossland and Vernon so stay tuned! You can also email us and request destinations and better yet work with us to get them on even faster…
